Despite extensive research in the past 50 years, flexoelectricity, the coupling between induced strain and electrical polarization, is still not fully understood. The flexoelectric constant, a fourth degree tensor, which relates the induced strain gradient with the resultant polarization, still remains undetermined for most elastomers, such as natural rubber, sellotape, etc. With a specific strain inducing method, pyramid compression, flexoelectric constant of those elastomers can be deduced from a sizable strain gradient. More understanding of the flexoelectric constant for different materials might provide more insight into the rather complex flexoelectric effects.
